Blackboard LTI 1.3 Setup Guide

Complete installation guide for Blackboard Learn administrators

VerbalCheck Configuration URLs

Provide these URLs to your Blackboard administrator when registering the LTI tool:

Initiate Login URL (OIDC)

Overview

This guide walks through installing VerbalCheck as an LTI 1.3 tool in Blackboard Learn. LTI 1.3 provides secure single sign-on, automatic roster sync, grade passback, and deep linking capabilities.

Prerequisites

For Blackboard Administrators:

  • Administrator access to Blackboard Learn
  • Permission to register LTI 1.3 tools
  • Access to System Admin → Integrations → LTI Tool Providers

For VerbalCheck Administrators:

  • Access to VerbalCheck admin panel
  • Ability to register new deployments

Installation Steps

Blackboard Admin: Register LTI Tool

  1. Log in to Blackboard as Administrator
  2. Navigate to System AdminIntegrationsLTI Tool Providers
  3. Click Register LTI 1.3/Advantage Tool
  4. Enter the Client ID provided by VerbalCheck (e.g., verbalcheck-yourschool)
  5. Click Submit

Blackboard Admin: Configure Tool Settings

After submitting, Blackboard will auto-populate configuration from VerbalCheck:

✅ Initiate Login URL, Tool Redirect URLs, JWKS URL, Domain

(All fields are automatically filled by Blackboard)

Set these Institution Policies:

  • Send User Data: Yes (required for SSO)
  • Allow Membership Service Access: Yes (enables roster sync)
  • Allow Grade Service Access: Yes (enables grade passback)

CRITICAL: Copy and Send Deployment ID

After configuration, Blackboard displays a Deployment ID. This is required to complete setup.

  1. Copy the Deployment ID from the Blackboard configuration screen
  2. Send it to: support@verbalcheck.com
  3. Include your institution name and contact info
  4. Do NOT send screenshots (security risk)
  5. Wait for confirmation from VerbalCheck

We have completed Blackboard LTI setup.
Please configure this deployment.

VerbalCheck Admin: Register Deployment

After receiving the Deployment ID from Blackboard admin:

  1. Log in to VerbalCheck Admin → LTI Management
  2. Find or create the Blackboard platform entry
  3. Add a new deployment with the received Deployment ID
  4. Activate the deployment
  5. Confirm back to Blackboard admin that setup is complete

Blackboard Admin: Create Placement

Make the tool visible to instructors by creating a placement:

  1. Go back to LTI Tool Providers
  2. Find VerbalCheck → Click dropdown → Manage Placements
  3. Click Create Placement
  4. Fill in:
    • Label: VerbalCheck
    • Handle: verbalcheck-tool
    • Type: Deep Linking content tool (default)
    • Target Link URI: https://www.verbalcheck.com/api/lti/deep-link
  5. Click Submit

Installation Complete!

Instructors can now add VerbalCheck to their courses via Build ContentVerbalCheck.

Testing the Integration

Before rolling out to all instructors, test with a pilot course:

  1. Create a test course in Blackboard
  2. Enroll a test instructor and 2-3 test students
  3. Instructor: Add VerbalCheck via Build Content → VerbalCheck
  4. Instructor: Create or select an assignment
  5. Student: Launch the assignment (verify SSO works)
  6. Student: Complete interview and submit
  7. Verify: Grade appears in Blackboard gradebook
  8. Verify: Students appear in VerbalCheck roster

Common Issues

❌ "Invalid Deployment ID" Error

Solution: Verify the Deployment ID was sent to VerbalCheck admin and registered in the admin panel. Check that the deployment is marked as active.

❌ "Missing Required Claims" Error

Solution: Verify "Send User Data" is set to "Yes" in Blackboard Institution Policies.

❌ Grades Not Appearing

Solution: Verify "Allow Grade Service Access" is set to "Yes" in Blackboard.

❌ Roster Not Syncing

Solution: Verify "Allow Membership Service Access" is set to "Yes". Roster sync triggers when an instructor launches the tool.
