Assignment Creation and Configuration

Create assignments with due dates, scoring setup, and correct course linkage.

Where Assignment Creation Happens

Assignments are typically created after launching VerbalCheck from Blackboard using the Content Market / LTI flow.

You will see the Create New VerbalCheck Assignment page for the current course context.

Required Assignment Fields

At minimum, set an Assignment Title and verify Maximum Points before submitting to Blackboard.

Set Due Date and Due Time during creation when you want the Blackboard assignment card and timeline to show a due date immediately.

  1. Enter Assignment Title (required).
  2. Enter Assignment Purpose (recommended). This text appears under the due date in Blackboard.
  3. Enter Instructions for Students (recommended). This supports rich text formatting.
  4. Set Due Date and Due Time (optional, but recommended when using Blackboard).
  5. Confirm Maximum Points.
  6. Choose whether to Publish immediately.

Link To A Blackboard Gradebook Item

If Link to Blackboard Gradebook Item (Optional) is available, you can link VerbalCheck to an existing Blackboard gradebook item instead of creating a new gradebook column. If you do not select one, VerbalCheck will create a new gradebook item when submitted.

Rubric and Interview Settings

If you plan to grade with a rubric, attach the rubric before students begin working so expectations are clear.

Interview Completion Requirements control how strongly interview completion impacts the student final grade.

  1. In Assignment Rubric, choose Add Rubric to attach a rubric (or Edit Rubric if one is already attached).
  2. In Interview Completion Requirements, set Interview Weight.
  3. If you want to require a fully completed interview, enable Require 100% interview completion. Partial completion will be treated as 0%.

Interview Weight Affects Final Grade

If a student does not complete the interview, their final grade will be reduced according to the Interview Weight setting. For example, if Interview Weight is 40% and the interview is not completed, the student receives 40% of the essay score. Review this setting carefully before publishing.

Optional, Recommended, Required

Interview Weight values are labeled in the UI. 0% is Optional, 100% is Required, and values in between are Recommended.

Submit to Blackboard (Recommended Sequence)

Use a consistent sequence to prevent partially configured assignments and missing LMS metadata.

  1. Create assignment and confirm all required fields.
  2. Attach rubric if grading rubric is required.
  3. Click the final submit action to add this assignment to your Blackboard course (when prompted).
  4. Verify in Blackboard that the assignment card shows the correct due date (if set) and description.
  5. Verify in Blackboard that the gradebook column exists and has the correct points possible.
